I have eaten nothing today, apart from breakfast, and a muffin, oh, and that apple I found under the table.

Now here's a clever little defence, should you ever find yourself accused of statutory rape: "His isolated and neglected childhood meant he had never had a meaningful relationship with an adult woman, apart from his partner of fifteen years at the time of the offences".

I am still trying to get my head around defence lawyers. They seem to be getting more and more bizarre.

Yerp. I do actually think that a person's experience of past trauma (etc) should be factored into determining their culpability, but this really does sound silly.
