Really? They must be anomalously hairy, your dogs. All the dogs whose limbpits I've checked have bald ones. I may have to broaden my research base, though, if what you say is true.
The dogs were just out to fool you, Anonymous. They were wearing specially-sculpted Canine Armpit Toupees. (That abbreviates to CAT, because that's what the toupees would be made out of if the dogs ever had their way).
That's very pleasing, Kate! (And hello!) Anonymous's findings have made me doubt my own factoid, though. Could someone please check their dog's armpits? We're just talking the very small area where the forelegs rub against the chest. Unfortunately I don't have any pups handy.
I have proof! I have photos! Unfortunately I am imperfectly acquainted with modern technology so I was at a loss as to how to get them uploaded or downloaded or whatever. So I emailed them to Richmond which I believe is near Preston (closer than Canberra, anyway) and they are available for inspection and comment at www.fridaysixpm.net under the heading “Factoid Debunked”.
This is very strange... I googled 'dogs armpits' and the third image that came up was Paris Hilton! Is google image search trying to tell us something?

I was sucked right in. And on Father's Day too. I checked both my dogs and they have hairy legpits. Four each.

Lex - for some reason that little factoid has haunted me all day long.

Maybe your dogs have shaved? Or they use depilatory cream?
Or perhaps they get an armpit wax at a puppy salon?
My dog is bald there too (very kind of him to participate in the experiment, what with his arthritis and all).

I will go over to Chez Beth to comment on this allegedly factoid-debunking beastling, Anon.
As for Paris Hilton, the less said the better.
