Mixed metaphor of the week

"As the Australian economy begins to recover, now is the time to nip a potential housing bubble in the bud", now with tip-top advice on why you should sell your house immediately and move in with a posse of bubble-blowing horticulturalists.

Earlier on today on New Matilda I noticed a nice mixed metaphor attached to the name 'Michael Brissenden':

The worm has truly begun to turn on John Howard's once impregnable grip on the top job, Michael Brissenden

He's an ABC journalist, and everything! That's PROFESSIONAL MIXED METAPHOR, thankyouverymuch.

Though I still prefer my own home-cooked version...

'Earlier on today on New Matilda'

That's not a mixed metaphor. That's what's known, in the technical jargon, as 'clumsy expression'.

Nip a bubble in the bud?

Oh blow that daffodil!

I like imagining a worm turning on John Howard. I can just see it. That worm, once his dinner companion and jogging mate says, "Johnny my boy, I've had enough, look here, this is a mallet and I signed up to the Labor Party recently. Watch as I rear my slimy head and press my skin against your little bald head and then I'm going to knock you down. We're not FRIENDS any longer!!!!! Raaaaaaarrrrrh!!!"

That is an amazingly cool image.

Earlier on today on New Matilda on a subject on which this writer has written on, and on, and on ....

The ABC comes up with some right corkers. A while ago they announced that the police commissioner was 'beefing up the police force for a crackdown', which sounds like a Tom of Finland drawing to me.

Now is as good a time as any to repeat that story about the hapless ABC presenter who, once upon a time, committed the following spoonerism to air:

'A person was bitten on the funnel by a finger-webbed spider the other night...'

Oh yes. And last week's favourite had to be 'NSW is the rust bucket of the national economy and an anchor around Australia's neck.' Gold!

Rustbucket gold.

As opposed to AM and Pm (Radio National) yesterday, where it wasn't mixed metaphor so much as double entrendre, where at AM they managed not to comment too much as political commentator after p c warned against 'premature withdrawal' of 'stimulus', or the economy which had been in a state of arousal...
By PM they were riding it for all it was worth
So to speak.

Aha!

WAYNE SWAN: Look, can I just make the point that those who don't acknowledge the impact of stimulus, the impact of stimulus which has kept this country from going into recession, then turn round and say it should be pulled out prematurely, they have learnt nothing from the events of the past four or five months.

You see, stimulus has been absolutely imperative to sustaining growth in the March quarter and it would be a mistake if we were to withdraw that stimulus prematurely, that's the point that people really need to understand.

You see, Malcolm Turnbull has shown monumental misjudgement, monumental misjudgement when he opposed the second stimulus. The second stimulus has been absolutely critical to confidence and employment in this economy, and if that were pulled out prematurely, then it would have the impact of undermining the recovery.

Of course, all Wayne seems to be saying here is that the stimulus is good, and if we didn't have the stimulus then we wouldn't have the stimulus, which is bad, because stimulus is good... etc, but the way he puts it is so much more... saucy!

I don't know if this blog is old enough for these sorts of comments.
