Houdini Beagle

While this blogge deplores dog-breedism and disapproves mightily of eugenicist interventions in the puppitariat's collective sex life, there is no denying: the beagle is a beast beyond compare. Not only can he sniff out decomposing marsupials within a five kilometre radius, not only can he cajole seven times his daily calorie requirements with a single whimper, not only can he melt steely-hearted misanthropes into soft-centred coo-mongers, not only are his armpits bald, but, lo!, he can escape impregnable dog-coops in a single bound. To wit:

(Special thanks to ex-Leichhardtian next door neighbour, Monsieur le Webster, for alerting me to this footage.)

Wow! That's very impressive. I can understand the Houdini's desperation though. Those coops are terrible places. Lentils, community decision-making, strangers crashing on the couches. Don't even start me on the impregnable ones!

(That's some very generous counting of bounds you're doing there, by the way).

Fortunately, Les cannot even escape over our 3 foot high gate (though he has been known to open it and run away for a couple of nights and turn up 10kms away).

I can imagine Les being a seasoned solo traveller.

The lentility of the coop aside, it's a little appalling, seeing all them beaglies lodged like that, far from their natural habitat on the sofa.

(Re the number of bounds, I figured it was one complex prussick up the wire wall, a prolonged wriggle through the roof, and one glorious bound through the ethereal sky.)

That was amazing, and elicited audible gasps of awe.

The Spaniel pups were amazed and delighted to see this Hairy Houdini's escapade. What was going through the minds of the onlookers left behind, we wondered? Thank you for an inspiring post! Love, Woollie.

Hellooo! I wondered that too, about the dogs who stayed in the cage. One puts her paw up to the wire just after Houdini's final leap to freedom, as if to say "Come back and save us!" or "Bring us back some pizza, would you?"
Love to you too, youse,
